National Starch Food Innovation understands that in specific fields of food and nutrition, such as infant formula or foods for specialist medical nutrition, the requirements are particular. For example, ingredients which are added to infant formula must meet higher standards with respect to microbiology and/or contaminants than ingredients for any other food application.
• Native starches specifically developed for infant formula, follow-on formula or
toddlers milk in powder form
• Emulsifying starches for foods for special medical purposes for infants, such as
formulas for infants with allergies
• Liquid dietetic products such as complete tube or sip feeds or liquid infant formula
• Baby food in jars
• Speciality starches for dysphagia patients to make liquids easy to swallow and help
to enhance quality of life
Challenges
• Counteracting milk regurgitation which reduces nutrient intake in infants.
• Delivering the appropriate viscosity in liquid foods for dysphagia patients who
cannot swallow properly
